In case you missed it, the 95th Academy Awards Nominees were announced yesterday morning. So this felt like the perfect opportunity to kick off my brand new film column!
My name is Bennett, and I’m a junior Communications major here at Norwich. And if you couldn’t tell already, I really enjoy writing, movies, and…well, writing about movies. It all kicked into gear for me back during the pandemic in 2020, when my dad and I dusted off a bunch of old DVDs and sank way too much money into subscription services. Most of what we watched were your basic dad movies: the Star Wars franchise, the James Bond movies, Top Gun, Air Force One – nothing too crazy (and dad, if you’re reading this – basic doesn’t always mean bad).
Ever since then, I’ve taken on the oh-so-prestigious hobby of writing tons of reviews for all sorts of films. And slowly but surely, I’ve even dragged my friends and family into it. After a trip to the theaters, my friends and I would cram into the backseat of a car and discuss the movie in detail. My parents will sometimes text me out of nowhere and ask what I thought of a movie to see if it’s worth watching. And hell – I’ll even get people that I rarely talk to knocking on my door (both metaphorically and sometimes literally) for a recommendation.
But you’re not here for an origin story (unless you are, in which case – aww thanks <3). You’re here because you saw a few movies in the past year that you really liked and are wondering if they might be up for an Oscar at the ceremony on March 2nd. I’ll run through the key award categories, but there will also be a link to the full nominations list at the end of this piece:

Again, this is only a few of the highlights – there are 23 different categories at this year’s Academy Awards. So there will be a link to the full list of nominees at the bottom of the article.
I plan to watch and review a couple of the 2025 Oscar nominees, and those reviews will of course be posted here. If you watched and enjoyed any one of these movies and are just dying to hear what I have to think for whatever reason, feel free to drop the name in the comments or on The Norwich Guidon Instagram page and I’ll get right on it (and don’t worry – you can also recommend other movies, this isn’t just an Oscar column).
I can’t wait to get this little project of mine off the ground and hope that it can eventually become a lively discussion on the world of movies!
