NORTHFIELD, Vt. –  The fifth ranked Norwich University Women’s Ice Hockey team suffered a non-conference setback Saturday night after falling 4-3 to third ranked Adrian in their East-West Classic opener.

Despite the Bulldogs holding the territorial advantage early on, it was the Cadets who struck first with a goal from sophomore Sam Murphy (Ottawa, On.), the first of her collegiate career. A minute and a half later Adrian drew even, which was quickly followed by Aimee Headland (Nottingham, U.K.) breaking the tie 17 seconds later giving Norwich the 2-1 lead at first intermission.

Early in the middle frame the Bulldogs poured on the pressure and broke through with two goals in 26 seconds to take the lead. The Cadets were outshot 12-4 in the period, but junior Leocadia Clark (Stowe, Vt.) kept the game in Norwich’s grasp through two periods.

Thirty-six seconds into the third Bulldog junior Karmen Anderson (Westfield, Ind.) gave Adrian a two-goal lead. The Cadets got close with a goal from junior Sage Biddle (Middletown, Del.) but ultimately ran out of time at the end.

“Tonight, was a great game between two top ranked teams,” Head Coach Sophie Leclerc Doherty said. “We are looking forward to another opportunity to compete again tomorrow.”

With the loss Norwich will face New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) rival Elmira in the East-West Classic consolation game Sunday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena beginning at 1 PM.
