Men’s Ice Hockey: Kerner, Elgstam Selected to Represent Their Countries in World University Games

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The coaching staffs of the countries competing in this year’s World University Games unveiled their rosters this week, including two members of the Norwich University Men’s Ice Hockey team as part of their respective country’s roster.

Representing Team USA will be sophomore forward Clark Kerner (Kansas City, Kan.). Last season Kerner was named to the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) All-Rookie team. He is following up his strong rookie campaign with seven goals and an assist this season which is tied for fourth in the NEHC in goals along with being the Cadets leading goal scorer.

Accompanying Kerner to the Games will be senior forward Philip Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden) who will don the three crowns as a member of Team Sweden. Despite only appearing in eight game this season, Elgstam is the team leader in total points (four goals, five assists) which is tied for 15th in the NEHC.

“I am very happy for both Philip and Clark to get the opportunity to represent their countries at the World University Games,” Head Coach Cam Ellsworth said. “This is well deserved and a huge honor.”

Both Kerner and Elgstam have also been named NEHC Player of the Week over the course of the season. Elgstam earned the honor by putting up two goals and two assists on Dec. 3 against Southern Maine. Kerner earned his early in the season by scoring game winning goals late in consecutive games against Johnson & Wales on Nov. 4 and UMass Boston on Nov. 5.

This year’s World University Games will mark the first-time rosters are comprised of Division III players. Round Robin games are scheduled to begin Jan. 11 with Team Sweden and Pool A playing at SUNY Canton Rink, while Team USA will play in Pool B at Clarkson University’s Cheel Rink. The Medal Rounds, which will be broadcast on ESPN, will take place Jan. 21-22 at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y.
