Women’s Basketball: Norwich suffers conference setback to rival Emmanuel
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women’s basketball saw its two-game winning streak snapped in a 84-41 loss to Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt on Saturday afternoon in Andrews Hall.
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) continued her impressive week, leading the Cadets behind a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double, with shooting marks of 6-8 from the floor and 7-10 from the charity stripe. Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach) trailed McGinn with nine points, knocking down three treys.
The Saints rushed out to a swift 6-0 lead on back-to-back long range bombs and never looked back, despite numerous attempts by the Cadets to whittle down the lead. A pair of layups from McGinn gave the Cadets some offense in the opening frame, before Emmanuel built a double-digit lead heading into the second quarter.
Norwich found momentum in the second quarter, trimming a 19-point lead down to 11 behind an 8-0 run on two three-pointers from Brewster and a perfect trip to the charity stripe from McGinn. Emmanuel gradually recovered over time, extending their lead to as large as 22 in the frame.
The Cadets’ offense held firm throughout the third quarter, still keeping within striking distance, until the Saints widened the gap even further in the final frame to collect an 84-41 win.
Angelina Giordano led Emmanuel off the bench, tallying 21 points. Olivia Matela and Yannie Chan logged 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Norwich will continue its three-game homestand in Northfield with a 4:00 p.m. duel against Saint Joseph’s College of Maine on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
