Women’s Basketball: Norwich coasts past Terriers behind 28-point fourth quarter

The Norwich University women’s basketball team turned an eight-point lead at the end of the third quarter into a 26-point, 65-39 victory over the Thomas College Terriers on Thursday evening in Andrews Hall in non-conference action.

Emily Haggerty put Thomas ahead early on a jumper, before the Cadets rallied for a quick 13-0 run to take a double-digit edge six minutes into the contest.  The Terriers would end the opening quarter on a 11-0 run en route to slicing Norwich’s lead to one less than a minute into the second stanza.

Norwich would embark on another substantial 10-0 run, capped off by five-straight points by Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.), that would gradually be whittled down by a subsequent 7-0 Thomas run that sent Norwich into halftime with a 27-23 lead.

The Cadets would keep the Terriers at bay throughout the third quarter, but a momentum-shifting three-pointer by Erika Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) began an onslaught that continued into the fourth quarter.

Six different Cadets got on the board in the closing 10 minutes, including a quarter-high eight from Mallorie Chalmers (Milton, Vt.).  Chalmers capped off Norwich’s dominant night with a long-range bomb with 44 seconds remaining on the clock.

Norwich shot a solid 37.7% clip for the game, which comprised of a pair of 50.0% quarters in the first and fourth, all the while holding the Terriers to 26.0% from the floor.

Erika Thomas led all scorers with 12 points, while Skylar Burzynski (Orange, Conn.) finished with 11 points.  Brewster posted her second-straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) nearly logged one of her own with nine points and 14 caroms.

The Cadets will have a rare weekend away from action, returning to the hardwood on Tuesday, Nov. 15, hosting Lesley University in the first game of a doubleheader.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.  Norwich will then participate in the Barre Granite Auditorium College Classic at the Barre Auditorium on Nov. 18-19 prior to Thanksgiving break.
