Wrestling: Sprinkel Places 1st, Lotruglio 4th at RIT Invitational

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Norwich University Wrestling team had a strong showing at the RIT Invitational Saturday finishing 8^th out of 16 teams while accumulating 77 points.

The highlight of the meet for the Cadets was junior Mason Sprinkel (Bel Aire, Md.) who came into the 285-pound bracket as the six seed. Sprinkel proceeded to win every match by fall on his way to winning first place in his class. Notable pins included the third seeded Nate DeGroff from RIT in the Quarterfinals at 3:36, the second seeded Evan Albrecht from Alfred State at 6:33 and top seed Jake Pine from SUNY Oneonta at 6:46.

Also significant for Norwich was sophomore Joseph Lotruglio (Andover, N.J.). Lotruglio entered the 141-pound draw as the fifth seed and advanced to the Semifinals after pinning RIT’s Josh Post at 2:48. However, Lotruglio was defeated by technical fall at the hands of top seeded Chris Horton, also from RIT, ending up with a fourth-place finish.

“We wrestled well and performed at a high level. I’m glad to end the semester on a high note after a challenging beginning to the year,” Head Coach Alex Whitney said. “Sprinkel and Lotruglio hit a new gear today. I’m excited for these guys to keep improving.”

The Cadets will look to start off 2023 strong when they attend the four team Williams Open on Saturday Jan. 7^th at 10 AM.
