Men’s Ice Hockey: Atherton Stops 34 as Cadets Ground Cardinals
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Coming off a strong weekend the eighth ranked Norwich University Men’s Ice Hockey team head into their winter break on a winning note after defeating twelfth ranked Plattsburgh State 2-1 Tuesday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
The first period was a scoreless one, however six minutes into the second period the Cardinals took a closing hand on the puck penalty which resulted in the Cadets drawing first blood. Senior Philip Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden) buried a wrist shot from the faceoff circle for his third goal in the last two games. Four minutes later freshman Nick Cordeiro (Mississauga, On.) scored his first collegiate goal to give Norwich a two-goal lead at the second intermission.
Plattsburgh cut the Cadet lead in half early in the third, but Drennen Atherton (Winter Haven, Fla.) shut the door stopping 34 out of 35 shots faced including 12 in the second and 14 in the third.
“I thought that game was up there with some of our best performances of the year,” Head Coach Cam Ellsworth said. “I’m proud of the group, very satisfied with the win and very happy about the first half.”
Up next for Norwich they will welcome SUNY Canton to Kreitzberg Arena on Friday Dec. 30 at 7 PM as part of the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament.
