NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women’s basketball team saw its hopes for the 2022 Ed Hockenbury Classic title dashed in a 62-39 defeat to the Trinity College Bantams in Andrews Hall in the championship game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The win gives Trinity its fourth Hockenbury crown in the last seven seasons, and its first since the 2017-18 campaign.  Eastern Nazarene rallied from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter of the consolation game to escape Northfield with a 66-61 win over Westfield State in the opening game of the afternoon.

Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) was the lone double-digit scorer for the Cadets, posting 14 points to go with five caroms.  Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) was just on the cusp, finishing with nine points while snagging two steals.

The opening frame saw both the Cadets and Bantams go back-and-forth, as a 5-0 run halfway through the stanza gave Norwich its largest lead of four, 12-8, before the Bantams retook a lead they would never relinquish on a 7-0 spurt.

Back-to-back treys from Trinity would send them into halftime with a 35-20 edge, and, despite Norwich’s success in trimming it back down to single-digits on numerous occasions throughout the third, the Bantams would roll in the final quarter, building a lead that grew to as large as 28 en route to the 23-point victory.

Francesca Silva led all scorers in the contest, logging 16 off the bench for the Bantams.  Emma Wax also tallied double-figures with 14 in 14 minutes of action.

Norwich’s Brittany Graham (Rye, N.H.) was tapped to the All-Tournament Team, after an eight-point performance today on 3-6 shooting from the floor.  The senior poured in a career-high 17 points in the win over Eastern Nazarene the day prior.

The Cadets will now flip the page to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, with a road trip to Rivier University scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. in Nashua, N.H.  Norwich will then return home to close out the first semester of play, hosting Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, Dec. 10.
